Portrait of After Liu Songnian

After Liu Songnian is a Song dynasty landscape artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art, most of them ink works.

This designation identifies an anonymous painter who worked in the manner of Liu Songnian rather than the Song master himself. Liu Songnian was a Chinese painter active around 1174 to 1224 and one of the leading artists of the Southern Song imperial painting academy at Hangzhou. He was known for finely detailed figure subjects and meticulous landscapes, and was later counted among the great academic masters of the period.

Works labeled "After Liu Songnian" are later copies or imitations that adapt his compositions and refined technique, often produced for collectors who prized the Southern Song court style.
