Taverner kept a tiny wooden box of watercolors under his bed and painted every sunrise for fifty years, even when his hands shook. He didn’t care about grand scenery—just the way morning light turned a fence post into something almost golden. If you wander the British countryside at dawn, stand where a cart track cuts through gorse bushes, and you’ll see what he saw; his “Classic Landscape” (1721–1772) is that exact spot on paper.
