Thomas Anshutz

Thomas Anshutz was an American painter who cared deeply about everyday life. He taught art for decades at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, shaping a generation of artists. His students included Robert Henri, who later became a leader in the Ashcan School.

Anshutz often painted workers and their families, focusing on the hard realities of life rather than idealized scenes.

What makes him stand out is his late shift in style. He started with detailed, almost photographic realism, but by the 1890s, his brushwork loosened and his colors grew bolder. His most famous work, The Way They Live, shows a family gathered in a dim room, their faces lit by a single lamp.

The painting feels raw and honest, with a soft, smoky effect called sfumato, where edges blur and shadows melt together.

Look for his use of light and shadow to guide your eye through the scene. His figures feel real because he painted them with care, not because he smoothed out their flaws. That’s why his work still feels fresh today.
