Cristoforo Cortese (active by the 1390s, died 1445) was the leading manuscript illuminator in Venice during the first half of the fifteenth century. Working in the late Gothic style, he produced miniatures and historiated initials for liturgical choirbooks and graduals as well as humanistic and devotional texts, dominating Venetian book illumination for nearly four decades. He is credited with developing forms of white vine-stem ornament, and he also worked as a panel painter.
Examples of his illumination survive in collections including the Biblioteca Marciana, the British Library, the Morgan Library & Museum, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
