Tsubaki Kakoku (1825-1850) was a Japanese painter of the late Edo period, born in Edo as the son of the painter Tsubaki Chinzan. He worked within the Nanga literati tradition and the realist current associated with Watanabe Kazan, his father's teacher. Kakoku showed precocious skill, producing accomplished compositions while still in his teens, and some of his works pay homage to the bird-and-flower paintings of the Qing Chinese artist Yun Shouping.
He died young, leaving only a small body of work, examples of which are held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
