John Rasmussen

American, d. 1895
John Rasmussen was an American Realism painter. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
John Rasmussen was an American folk painter born in Germany in 1828 who emigrated to the United States in 1865. He worked as a house and fresco painter in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was listed in local business directories through the 1870s. Widowed and in poor health, he was committed to the Berks County Almshouse in Shillington in 1879 and remained there until his death in 1895.
While in residence he took up landscape painting, producing detailed aerial views of the almshouse and its grounds. His work follows the example of fellow resident Charles C. Hofmann and belongs to the tradition of the Pennsylvania almshouse painters.
