Master of Charles of Durazzo

Master of Charles of Durazzo is the notname given to an anonymous Florentine painter active in the last decades of the fourteenth century and the early fifteenth. He takes his name from a panel in the Metropolitan Museum of Art depicting the conquest of Naples by Charles III of Durazzo, who defeated Otto of Brunswick in 1381. The panel formed part of a cassone, a decorated marriage chest, and the artist is regarded as one of the first Florentine painters to develop elaborate secular narrative scenes for such furniture.

His style is close to that of Agnolo Gaddi and to the painter known as the Master of San Martino a Mensola, sometimes identified as Francesco di Michele.
