Landscape with Castle and Shepherds is a 1814 by Achille Etna Michallon, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
A shepherd rests under a tree in a French valley. A castle sits on a cliff above them. The Alps rise in the background under a stormy sky. Michallon painted this at 18. He trained in Rome where artists studied ruins and grand landscapes. The castle looks like Northern Italy’s old forts. Soft light hits the trees while dark clouds gather. This work shows how French artists mixed emotion with classical rules. Look up Achille Etna Michallon (French, 1796–1822).
This landscape illustrates the sublime beauty of nature, a Romantic concept, but it also reflects the importance of classical training in Rome. Throughout the 19th century, artists flocked to Italy to study classical ruins and themes, as well as landscapes. Here, the castle evokes Northern Italian fortresses, and in the tradition of other French artists traveling to Rome, Michallon imbued his rendering of the Alps with great emotion.
