The Beggars of Bruges is a 1880 by Alphonse Legros, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white drawing shows a crowded, dim room where a group of people huddle together. Some sit on the floor, others lean or kneel, all dressed in rough, old-fashioned clothes. One woman holds a baby, while others reach out or gesture toward a man in the center who looks like he’s speaking or begging. The walls are plain, and the light comes from a small window in the back. Notice how the artist uses deep shadows and strong contrasts to show the people’s expressions and clothing details. This makes the scene feel tense and real. Check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and dark to create drama.
