Young Man and Maids is a 1506 ink by Erhard Altdorfer, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a young man sitting on a bench, holding a small object in his hands. Behind him, two women stand—one with her back turned, the other facing him slightly. The background is simple: a window with a view of a building and a wall with a small shelf. The lines are sharp, and the clothes look like they’re made of heavy fabric, with lots of folds. The artist used a technique where they carved lines into metal, then pressed ink into those lines to make the print. This made the shadows and textures look very detailed.
