The Lovers is a 1490 ink by Wenzel von Olmutz, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows two people sitting on a ledge. The person on the left holds a baby in their lap, dressed in a loose shirt and a headscarf. The person on the right leans forward, wearing a hat and a tunic, with one hand resting on their chest. A small pot and a bird perch sit on the ground near them, and a plant grows in a pot to the left. The image uses fine lines and shading to create depth, typical of early printed art. This style was a big shift from hand-painted work at the time. Look up engraving to see how this technique works.
Wenzel von Olmutz (1500–1490) was a Bohemian artist, born in Moravia.
