About this work

This painting shows a row of houses on a street corner. The buildings are light-colored, with a few windows and chimneys. There's a small fence in front of the houses, and some people are standing around. The houses have a classic look, with decorative details on the roofs and walls. The artist used watercolor to create a soft, gentle effect. The scene feels peaceful, like a quiet moment in a small town. The story of this work

Overview

This watercolour by Anderson, dated 1940, depicts a pair of vine-covered Georgian houses on Market Hill in Buckingham. Part of the "Recording Britain" collection, it was created under a wartime scheme that employed artists to document British towns, landscapes, and landmarks threatened by war or modernization. The project, funded by the Pilgrim Trust and directed by Sir Kenneth Clark, aimed to preserve a visual record of places and traditions perceived as at risk. Over 1,500 works were produced by 97 artists between 1940 and 1943.
