Marine
1670
ink
From the collection of National Gallery of Art
Marine is a 1670 ink by Unknown, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a busy harbor scene with many tall sailing ships. The water is calm, and the boats have lots of ropes and flags. Some ships are close together, while others float farther out. The drawing uses simple lines and soft gray tones. Notice how the artist used quick strokes to show movement in the water and sails. The ships look like they’re ready for a voyage, but the scene feels quiet. If you like this style, check out the Baroque movement next.
