Description of Egypt: Thebes. Medynet-Abou, Vol. II, Pl. 12 is a 1822 by Antoine Phelippeaux, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This image shows a long, colorful scene carved into stone. On the left, rows of people in simple robes stand in neat lines, holding tools and offerings. To the right, a man in a striped outfit rides a decorated horse, with a sun symbol above him. The background is packed with Egyptian-style writing and symbols. The text at the bottom calls it a "colored bas-relief," meaning the carving was painted after being cut into the wall. This kind of art was meant to tell stories or honor important figures in ancient Egypt. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this in person.
