Retour du Marché de St. Jean-de-Mont is a 1910 by Auguste Lepère, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet village scene by a river. A few people walk or ride in a cart, carrying baskets and bags. Tall, twisted trees frame the scene, and small houses sit in the background under a flat sky. The artist used loose, quick lines to suggest movement and life in everyday moments. The trees look almost like they’re blowing in the wind, even though it’s just ink on paper. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this in person.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
