Three Medals with Coats of Arms is a 1525 ink by Sebald Beham, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three round designs inside a framed border. Each circle has a shield with strange symbols—like a lion, a ship, and a crown—surrounded by swirling lines and small animals. The details are all drawn with sharp, thin lines, making everything look precise and a little stiff. The middle shield has a lion standing on a shield, which was often used to show strength or family pride. The other two circles mix symbols that don’t match at first glance, like a ship with a crown or a crown with a bird. This kind of drawing is made using engraving.
Sebald Beham (1500–1550) was a German painter and printmaker, mainly known for his very small engravings.
