Rapids with Overhanging Branches (verso) is a 1709 ink by Joachim Franz Beich, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows a wild river rushing under tangled branches. The water swirls fast, with white foam and dark rocks in the current. Trees lean over the river, their bark and leaves drawn in quick, sketchy lines. The colors are mostly gray and brown, with some white highlights on the water and leaves. Notice how the artist used thin washes of gray to build up the shadows—it looks almost like layers of mist. The paper is blue, which makes the watercolors pop in contrast. Look up technique: watercolor, glazing to see how artists build up light and shadow this way.
