The Archbishop Blessing the Child after the Baptism is a 1502 ink by Hans Burgkmair the Elder, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows an archbishop in robes raising his hand over a baby held by a woman. His other hand rests on a book. The baby is wrapped in cloth. The woman wears a simple dress. Woodcuts were made by carving an image into wood, then inking it. The ink stayed on the raised parts when pressed onto paper. This let artists make many copies fast. Check out how Burgkmair I, Hans did this work.
Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531) was a German artist, born in Augsburg.
