Raising of Lazarus is a 1635 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a crowded, emotional gathering around a sick man lying on the ground. The people are dressed in flowing robes, some standing, some kneeling, all focused on the center where two figures tend to the man. The background looks like a cave or dark space, with rough lines suggesting movement and energy. Notice how the artist used sharp, scratchy lines to show both the drama and the texture of the clothes. The faces are simple but full of expression, making the scene feel urgent. Check out how this work uses etching to create such detailed, dramatic lines.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
