Unarmed Drill is a 1634 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three men in old-fashioned military clothes, each holding a sword. Their hats have big feathers or curls, and they’re standing on a simple line that looks like a parade ground. One man points with his sword, another holds his sword low, and the third leans on his. The drawing is made with a sharp, scratchy style that feels quick and rough. The lines are thin but full of movement, like the men are mid-action. This style is called etching.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
