Two Studies of Men is a 1700 oil by Luca Carlevarijs, a Baroque work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows two men in simple clothes, one reaching toward a basket the other holds. The man on the right raises his arm, palm open, as if talking or asking for something. These sketches might look quick and loose, but they weren’t just doodles. The artist painted them outside first, then used them later in bigger, more polished works. If you like this loose style, check out Carlevarijs, Luca.
The drawing shows two men in quick studies, with the figure on the right raising his right arm toward the round, shallow basket held by the man on the left. It belongs to an album of fifty-three sketches by Carlevarijs, many of which appear to have been made outdoors and later incorporated into his finished works. The album reflects the artist’s attention to contemporary Venetian dress, a style widely admired in Europe from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries.
