Overview

A seated Chinese moneychanger examines a string of coins at his table, while a standing customer waits beside him in a scene drawn in Macau. The work is one of 93 sheets in an album of sketches made by George Chinnery in Macau and its surroundings. Chinnery, born in London in 1774, worked as a portraitist in India before settling in Macau in 1825, where he remained until his death in 1852.
