Cephas Thompson maintained an extensive career as an itinerant portraitist from approximately 1800 to 1825. Though based in Middleborough, Massachusetts, his work took him along the Atlantic coast to cities such as Baltimore, Charleston, and New Orleans. He notably completed over 132 portraits during five visits to Bristol, Rhode Island, before retiring around age fifty to farm in his hometown.

The cultural influence of Cephas and Olive Thompson extended through their descendants. Their son, Cephas Giovanni Thompson, followed his father into painting and developed a friendship with author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Furthermore, a grandson, through their daughter Florantha, married James Hutchings, who became an an early advocate for the preservation and promotion of Yosemite National Park.
