This drawing shows a row of old houses with steep, tiled roofs. The roofs are made of small, neat tiles, some slanted and others flat. Brick walls and small windows with dark frames line the street, and a wrought-iron gate is visible in the lower left corner. The artist used thin, crisscrossed lines to create shadows and texture, especially on the roofs and walls. This technique makes the surfaces look detailed and three-dimensional. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build up shading with lines.
