Landing Place is a 2011 by Merlyn Chesterman, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Merlyn Chesterman’s *Landing Place* is a 2011 woodblock print. It shows cliffs and sea caves, with carved shapes for birds in flight. The wood’s texture mimics the water and rock layers. Chesterman shaped the woodblock edges to keep the flat, print-like feel. She got into woodcuts after seeing them used as window covers in China. Check out more prints by Merlyn Chesterman.
The woodblock print *Landing Place* by Merlyn Chesterman depicts a cliff with caves and a sea, featuring birds perched on the rocks. The artist carved the block to create white silhouettes of birds and rock formations at the top, while the natural wood grain represents the cliff’s strata and the sea below. Sections of the block were cut away to form white bird shapes against the darker rock, and the shaped edge highlights the two-dimensional surface of the woodblock. Chesterman’s interest in woodcuts developed during a visit to China, where she observed their use in windows.
