View near Rosora di Serra San Quirico is a 1556 ink by Gherardo Cibo, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet countryside scene with a winding dirt path leading to a small stone building. A few trees line the path, some bare, others blooming with white flowers. In the distance, a larger building sits on a hill, surrounded by a fence. A person walks near the fence, and a few sheep graze by a stream. The artist used thin, quick lines to sketch the scene, then added darker washes and white highlights to give it depth. The paper has a blue tint underneath, which peeks through in some spots. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with layers of lines.
Gherardo Cibo, also known by the alias of Ulisse Severini da Cingoli (1512 − 30 January 1600), was an artist and a herbalist from Italy.
