About this work

You see a table covered in food: a lobster, oysters, grapes, peaches, and a fancy porcelain bowl. A gold cup and a knife with a carved handle sit nearby. The bowl is the real star. It came from China, but by the 1640s, wars stopped most imports. That made it rare—maybe as valuable as the gold next to it. The artist painted every crack in the glaze and every shine on the fruit to show off how precious everything is. If you like this kind of careful detail, look up *chiaroscuro*.
