Academy is a 1749 chalk by Gilles Demarteau the Elder, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a person sitting on a cloth, drawn in loose, warm brown lines. Their back is turned, one arm resting on their knee, the other dangling toward the floor. The paper has a textured look, like old fabric, and the whole image feels quick and sketchy. The artist signed it "Carle Vanloo," but the print says Demarteau the Elder. That might be a mix-up—sometimes old sketches get confusing labels. If you like this style, check out Baroque art for more dramatic, sketchy figures.
Gilles Demarteau the Elder (1776–1776) was an artist.
