Jesus Calling to St. Peter and St. Andrew is a 1523 by Dirck Vellert, a Renaissance work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a dramatic scene with three men in robes. One man stands tall, pointing toward a group of two others who are huddled together. Behind them, a busy town with buildings and a river stretches into the distance. The sky is full of clouds, and trees frame the scene. Notice how the pointing figure’s gesture draws the others’ attention, creating a sense of urgency. The artist used sharp lines and deep shadows to make the figures stand out against the busy background. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how light and shadow create drama in art.
Dirck Vellert (1480–1547) was a Renaissance artist, born in Amsterdam.
