The Swann's Inn with Farms is a 1560 ink by Johannes van Doetechum the Elder, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a quiet village with a big house on the left and smaller huts nearby. A dirt road winds through the middle, where two riders on horseback gallop past a person walking. Logs are piled along the road, and a dog trots behind the riders. Trees with bare branches frame the scene, and the sky is just a faint line at the top. The artist used a mix of lines to show depth, with darker shading on buildings and horses. This was a common way to make etchings look more detailed back then. Next, check out etching to see how artists like this one made prints with acid and metal plates.
Joannes van Doetecum the Elder (1530 – 1605) was a Dutch engraver-cartographer known for his etched works after genre scenes by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and maps of various cities in the Netherlands.
