Portfolio IX, Plate 319: Snoqualmu Type is a 1901 by Edward S. Curtis, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man in profile. His face is serious, turned slightly away from us. He wears a dark coat with a thick fur collar that stands out against the lighter background. The lighting hits his face from one side, leaving his shadowed cheek in near-darkness. The fur collar looks warm and heavy, like it’s meant for cold weather. The artist used shading to make the face stand out sharply from the background. Check out chiaroscuro to see how this strong light-and-shadow effect works.
Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was an American artist.
