Charge of the Cavalry (Charge de cavalerie contre des chasseurs) is a 1856 ink by Gerhardus Emaus de Micault, a Impressionism work, depicting Battle, held at National Gallery of Art.
A cavalry unit charges straight at hunters on foot. Their horses kick up dust. Rifles lie scattered on the ground. This is a drypoint print, not just an etching. That means the artist scratched lines directly into a metal plate. The scratches hold ink, making the lines fuzzy and bold. The image feels urgent, like a snapshot of chaos. Check out the National Gallery of Art, Washington to see it in person.
