A Thick Forest is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, depicting Hunting, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a dense, dark forest. Tall pines and oaks press in from all sides. A narrow path cuts through the shadows at the center. Allart van Everdingen loved forests like this. He spent time in Norway and Sweden, so these aren’t Dutch trees. They’re wild, northern kinds with rough bark and tangled roots. Look up the National Gallery of Art, Washington to see more of his prints.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
