The Bear and the Wolf are Persecuted is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, depicting Hunting, held at National Gallery of Art.
A bear and a wolf are chased by dogs through a wild, rocky landscape. Trees bend in the wind, and the animals scramble over stones, looking back in fear. This print shows nature as harsh and untamed, not peaceful or pretty. The artist, Allart van Everdingen, may have traveled in Scandinavia, where he saw rough terrain like this. He made many prints of wild forests and rushing water, often using a needle to scratch lines into metal. technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
