Peisaj cu clădiri vechi; pandant: Peisaj cu râu și ruine is a work by Anton Faistenberger, held at Brukenthal National Museum.
This painting shows a quiet landscape with a mix of nature and ruins. A winding river cuts through the scene, with a few people scattered around—one standing near a broken stone wall, another bending over by the water, and a third walking away. Trees line the riverbank, and in the distance, old buildings and mountains fade into a soft, cloudy sky. The artist used deep shadows and bright light to make the scene feel alive, especially on the faces and rocks. This trick is called *chiaroscuro*—when dark and light areas create a sense of depth. Try looking up chiaroscuro to see how other artists used it.
