About this work

This print shows a woman holding a baby, surrounded by five other figures. The woman sits on a throne-like chair, dressed in flowing robes. Around them, cherubs float in the sky, and two robed figures stand below, one holding a book. The scene has a soft, shadowy look with detailed folds in the clothing. The print’s title at the bottom names it *The Madonna with Saint Francis*, but the figures aren’t labeled. The artist, Fessard, made this mid-1700s print after a painting by Correggio. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this strong light-and-shadow effect works.
