Les notables (grande planche) (The Notables) (large plate) is a 1915 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a group of five people walking together. The person on the left wears a tall hat and a long coat, holding a cane. The others are bundled in heavy clothes, with one woman carrying a child. The lines are loose and scratchy, giving the scene a quick, rough feel. The artist used a technique called drypoint to create the texture—you can see the deep, grooved lines where the needle scratched the metal plate. This made the ink sit heavily in those marks. Next, look up technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how artists like this one made their prints.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
