Pietà (3e planche) (Pietà) (third plate) is a 1910 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows five figures in a rough, loose style. One person lies down, wrapped in cloth, while others kneel or stand around them. The lines are quick and uneven, like hurried notes. The background is almost empty, just a few scattered marks. The artist used a sharp tool to scratch into the paper, creating dark lines against a light background. This method lets shadows pop without much shading. Next, check out etching to see how artists use acid and metal plates to make prints.
