About this work

This sketch shows two soldiers in a quick, loose style. One stands with his hands on his hips, wearing a cap and a long coat. The other crouches, also in a cap and coat, looking up at him. The lines are rough and fast, like hurried notes. The drawing uses only black marks on light paper, giving it a sketchy, unfinished feel. The soldiers’ clothes and poses suggest they’re in a military setting, maybe on duty or at rest. Want to see more by this artist? Check out Forain, Jean-Louis.
