Before the Fourth is a 2004 by Lucian Freud, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This is an etching by Lucian Freud from 2004. It shows a pregnant woman seated, her body turned slightly sideways. The print is one of 143 proofs pulled from the same plate. Freud’s printer, Marc Balakjian, worked closely on this series. The plate was etched by Paul Dewis, then proofed and printed by Balakjian himself. The etching *Before the Fourth* by Lucian Freud, created in 2004, depicts a nude pregnant woman reclining on a bed. The work is one of 143 state, trial, and cancellation proofs from Freud’s etching series, printed by his longtime collaborator Marc Balakjian. The subject is Annabel Mullion, who was expecting her fourth child at the time. The plate was initially etched by Paul Dewis before being finalized and printed by Balakjian at Studio Prints in London.
