Sketch of a Head (verso) is a 1784 by Gaetano Gandolfi, a Rococo painting work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This looks like a rough, worn piece of paper with faint marks. The top half has smudged, uneven strokes in red, blue, and brown—maybe clouds or brushwork. Below, a quick sketch of a face appears, barely there, with a few lines for eyes and a mouth. The paper is brown and torn at the edges, like it’s been handled a lot. The writing at the bottom is in Italian, but it’s hard to read. The sketch feels unfinished, almost like a quick note or practice drawing. If you like this style, check out Romanticism for more loose, expressive works.
Gaetano Gandolfi (31 August 1734 – 20 June 1802) was an Italian painter, draughtsman and sculptor of the late Baroque period, mainly active in and around Bologna.
