Subject & Meaning
The composition illustrates a moment from Greek mythology in which the huntress goddess Diana confronts the nymph Callisto, who has been discovered in a state of undress. Diana, robed in white, presides over a group of partially nude women and a few clothed male figures, suggesting the tension between chastity, revelation, and divine judgment.
Technique & Style
Gandolfi employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, juxtaposing bright illumination on the central figures with a deep, shadowed background. This contrast creates a sculptural sense of volume and draws the eye toward the goddess. The palette is restrained, with muted earth tones punctuated by the pale white of Diana’s garment and hints of blue sky filtered through foliage.
History & Provenance
Created toward the end of Gandolfi’s career, the painting reflects the artist’s continued interest in mythological narratives. After remaining in private hands for several decades, it entered the National Museum in Warsaw’s holdings, where it has been displayed as part of the museum’s European Baroque collection.
