Christ on the Cross is a 1470 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a simple scene of three figures. In the center, a man is nailed to a cross, his head crowned with a green halo. To his left, a woman with a light halo stands with her hands clasped. To his right, another figure in a long robe holds a scroll, also wearing a halo. The figures are flat and stylized, with bold outlines and bright colors. The background is plain, focusing attention on the shapes and symbols. This style was common in early printed art. Look up woodcut to see how this technique works.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
