This painting shows a quiet waterfront scene at dusk. Five figures stand near the shore—some watching the water, others walking. The sky is soft blue-gray with streaks of white, while the water below is deep blue, almost black in spots. A few boats float in the distance, and a lone pole stands near the right edge. The brushstrokes are loose and quick, giving the scene a fresh, sketchy feel. The colors are simple but bright, especially the red and orange in the figures’ clothing. Check out impasto to see how artists use thick paint for texture.
