Cleopatra is a 1535 by Sebald Beham, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows a woman kneeling on one knee, half-naked with a chain wrapped around her ankle. She leans against a wall with a window behind her, looking down with a sad expression. Her hair is loose, and she wears a loose cloth draped over her shoulders. The chain on the floor and the small tools on the wall suggest she might be in a room where she’s being held. The artist used strong contrasts between light and dark to make the scene feel dramatic. Check out more works by Hans Sebald Beham.
