Dominant colour
Lark Finch, Prairie Finch and Brown Song Sparrow is a 1837 ink by Robert Havell Jr., a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three birds perched and standing in a natural setting. The top bird has a reddish-brown head and streaked body, while the middle one is mostly black with white wing patches. The bottom bird has soft brown and white feathers, sitting near grass and a small acorn. The artist used fine lines and shading to make the feathers look real. This was a common way to add detail in old prints. Look up engraving to see how artists like this made precise, delicate images.
The Havell family of Reading, Berkshire, England, included a number of notable engravers, etchers and painters, as well as writers, publishers, educators, and musicians.
