Stanley Hawk is a 1828 ink by Robert Havell Jr., a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three birds in flight or perched. The biggest bird, a hawk, sits on a branch with its wings slightly spread. Above it, another hawk soars with wings wide open, showing detailed feathers. A small blue bird flies in the top corner, looking tiny next to the others. The hawk on the branch holds a smaller bird in its talons, showing its sharp claws. The feathers on all three birds are drawn with careful lines, making them look real. Look up engraving to see how artists like this one used metal plates to print detailed images.
The Havell family of Reading, Berkshire, England, included a number of notable engravers, etchers and painters, as well as writers, publishers, educators, and musicians.
