About this work

This painting shows three men on what looks like a dark, stormy night. One man in the middle is slumped forward, his arms bound with rope, while another man on the right holds a heavy wooden cross. The third man, on the left, watches with a serious face. The colors are mostly dark—deep blues and browns—with some light blue cloth and a few patches of red and white. The man holding the cross seems to be helping the bound man stand, almost like he’s carrying some of his weight. The ropes around the middle man’s wrists look rough and tight, making his skin look pale. If you like how the light and dark play off each other here, look up *chiaroscuro*.
