About this work

This painting shows a simple farm scene with a thatched-roof cottage in the background. In front of the house, a group of cows and sheep graze on patchy grass. Some animals stand near a wooden fence, while others lie down. The colors are mostly earthy browns and soft greens, with a few white and black spots on the animals. The artist paid close attention to how light hits the animals and the building, making some areas look brighter than others. This style was common in watercolors of the time. Look up technique: chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works in other art.
