The Last Judgment is a 1549 ink by Augustin Hirschvogel, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a chaotic scene with people fighting, animals running, and figures in the sky. Some men wrestle on the ground while others stand above, pointing or reaching down. Strange creatures and a goat-like beast add to the wild mix. The text below is in German and looks like a warning or Bible quote. It’s all crammed into a small space, making the scene feel even more packed. This is an example of etching, a printing method where artists scratch into metal plates.
Augustin Hirschvogel (1503 – February 1553) was a German artist, mathematician, and cartographer known primarily for his etchings.
